Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1952, the education that Raya received during her formative years was exceptional, especially in the field of art. Her inspiration and desire for a life of creative expression were seeded during this time. She notes her parent's encouragement as a cornerstone to her development in the arts.

Originally, Raya studied sculpture and jewelry design. While living in California, Raya discovered her talent and interest in printmaking. Her love of this medium led to intensive study at the College of the Redwoods. This education laid a solid technical foundation for the work she now produces. Today, as a resident of Phoenix, Arizona, Raya believes her most recent work reflects greater personal vision and a philosophy that continues to evolve.
