About the Artwork

Saturday Evening Post cover, Jul 06, 1946.

The original painting of Norman Rockwell's Statue of Liberty illustration for the July 6, 1946 cover of The Saturday Evening Post was once owned by director Steven Spielberg, a long-time fan and collector of Norman Rockwell's work, and was eventually donated the official White House Collection in 1994 - where it has remained on display in the Oval Office across three Presidential administrations.

An appropriately patriotic and artistic display; the painting features a crop of Lady Liberty's outstretched arm, being scaled by several repair workers (miniscule by comparison) doing their best to keep the symbolic statue's torch alive. Through this illustration, Rockwell succeeds in expressing a theme of both national pride and humility.
