Robert Rauschenberg (1925-), an American artist, is one of the most influential figures in avant-garde art. He studied at a variety of institutions, including the Kansas City Art Institute, the Acad,mie Julian in Paris, Black Mountain College in North Carolina and the Art Students League in New York.

In the early 1950s, Rauschenberg worked experimentally through periods where he used all white, all black, or all red in his paintings.
