| Adrien Chancel was a student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in the latter 1870's. He worked in the atelier of Constant Moyaux. As a student, Chancel was known for his inventive and articulate use of iron and glass. In the Grand Prix project of 1877, An Atheneum for a Capital City, his elaborate precast metal design was to become the inspiration for many late Victorian conservatories and glass houses. Chancel's Construction professor was Emmanuel Brune. Brune himself was a student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and a contemporary of Postolle and Benard. Brune was renowned as most avant garde in the use of new construction materials and the engineering possibilities that they made possible. The role of iron in French construction was enhanced during this period because modest technical innovation was combined with clear and practical design.
