Artist Biographies

Nobu Haihara

To me, art is myself. All my life's experiences are there in every piece. Creating is like recycling a newspaper, a can, or even some plastic. Everything in this world, whatever I see - sometimes it's sad, angry, or an expression of happiness - I can process with my mind and re-use it to make something new. Everything can be recycle, including art.

Born in Fukuoka, Japan in 1959, Haihara moved to the U.S. in 1985 working for Space of Nippon with a specialty in traditional Japanese interior design. In 1989 Haihara embarked on his new career in hand color separation and has been working with the team at serigrapher Marco Fine Arts since 1992.

Alongside his professional achievements, Haihara's private work has evolved into a distinct and personalized style. He began painting original canvases in both oil and acrylic, as well as developing a unique abstract form of sculpture - applying his skill and technique as a serigrapher to print his own cutting-edge modernist images that break the barrier between graphic and fine art. Recently, in 1995, Haihara was commissioned by the Los Angeles Lakers to document, in his unique style, their 1984-85 championship team on its 10th anniversary.

Much like the function of audio in cinematography, Haihara's incorporation of text into his silk-screen prints brings definition to his images depicting daily rituals of American life. Reminiscent of historical Japanese Ukiyoe wood block prints that combine both imagery and poetry, this new medium interprets for us Haihara's original conception of the images that appear before you.
