Artist Biographies

Susan Jokelson

Born, raised and educated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Susan Jokelson holds a B.A. in English and French literature from the University of Pennsylvania. She spent a year teaching American literature at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland and touring the continent during breaks. Following that she spent two years in New York City, studying French at Columbia University and supporting herself by writing.

Once Susan settled in California in the late sixties, she began producing artwork, at first small watercolors with some mixed media. In the eighties, she explored the medium of artist’s books, making both one-of-a-kind and editioned works. One of the latter is in the Getty Collection in Los Angeles and in the Rita and Marvin Sackler Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry in Miami.

Currently Susan concentrates on collages of found papers that blend Asian influences with botanical elements. She also produces handmade notecards of very small collages. Her larger works can be seen at the SFMOMA Rental Gallery in San Francisco.
