Terry Rose

For Terry Rose (1939-), the act of drawing is an event comparable to the athletic performance he so skillfully captures in his artwork. "Like an athlete," says Rose, "I prepare for it and then attempt to stop thinking and let my instincts guide me." Each completed work is the result of much preparation, study and development. Inspired by movement and energy, Rose uses lines, light on top of dark, to create tension and movement. His connection with an athlete is based upon how the athlete responds at any given moment and, by capturing the critical instant with his brush and paint, he arrests the moment but retains the spirit and essential gesture of the athlete at the peak of performance.

Although acclaimed for his paintings specific to sports and the performing arts, Rose also pursues other painting which challenges his accomplished eye for gesture and nuance; rollercoasters and large canvases depicting narrative abstract landscapes of thoughts and feelings are his current ancillary challenges.

With a background in graphic design and printmaking, Rose has received several awards in illustration, poster and package design, has served as a guest lecturer on both topics, and has been commissioned to design catalogues and materials for a wide variety of sporting and performing arts projects, record albums, as well as children's educational materials. In addition, Rose donated the poster design for Special Olympics of California and regularly contributes to various charity art auctions.

He currently resides in Los Angeles, California.
